The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using...

Readers of our first CHARM I atlas will know that almost everything contained within the atlas was original work resulting from two years of intensive study of the Dover Strait by a dedicated and inter- disciplinary team working from bases on either side of the Channel. The present atlas has carried on this eminent precedent, though this time covering the whole of the eastern English Channel (figure 1) and widening considerably the thematic scope. We believe that readers of this current atlas will be impressed by both the breadth and depth of the information provided, and that therefore this content should be available for use in both a wide variety of fields and at various levels of interest (researchers, industries, statutory organisations, the wider...

Campagnes expérimentales de chalutage en Manche orientale. Les campagnes C.G.F.S. 1997 & 1998 ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck.
lfremer carries out a yearly bottom trawl survey named Channel Ground Fish Survey (CGFS) in order to collect essential biological data on major exploited fish species in the Eastern Channel. These data are also provided to feed the indispensable historie series to the yearly assessment of resources. This report presents results of the CGFS surveys for 1997 and 1998, under two aspects: a multispecific approach of the biological assemblages and integrating an interannual analysis, then a monospecific analysis of 7 species of commercial interest, as whiting, pout, cod, red gurnard, plaice, black bream, red mullet. INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...

P>1. The development of ecosystem approaches to environmental management implies the need to account for multiple pressures on ecosystems. Trends in multiple metrics that respond differently to changes in major environmental pressures need to be combined to evaluate the impacts of fishing and environmental changes on fish communities. 2. An exploited fish community is viewed as a three-level food chain in which the two upper levels, or functional groups, are targeted by fishing fleets, while the lowest level is subject to environmental variation. Qualitative modelling is used to predict changes at the two upper levels, that is, top-down vs. bottom-up perturbations. Abundance and length metrics are calculated from survey data for 14 Mediterranean and...

Eastern English Channel fish assemblages: measuring the structuring effect of habitats on distinct sub-communities ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck.
Multivariate and spatial analyses are used to identify and locate fish, cephalopod, and macrocrustacean species assemblages in the eastern English Channel from 1988 to 2004. Four sub-communities with varying diversity levels were identified in relation to depth, salinity, temperature, seabed shear stress, sediment type, and benthic community nature. From 1997 to 2004, some 25% of overall community structure variance could be related to the available environmental descriptors and 20% to persistent factors such as depth, seabed shear stress, sediment, and macro-invertebrate community type. Although there may be significant interannual shifts in overall community structure and composition, the sub-communities identified persisted over time, reflecting the...

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

Modelled distributions of ten demersal elasmobranchs of the eastern English Channel in relation to the environment ArchiMer
Martin, Corinne; Vaz, Sandrine; Ellis, J. R.; Lauria, Valentina; Coppin, Franck; Carpentier, Andre.
Generalised Linear Models, combined with a Geographic Information System, were used to map the habitats of ten demersal elasmobranch taxa (five skates, four sharks and a stingray) in the eastern English Channel, based on an annual fishery-independent bottom trawl survey conducted each October, and covering 21 years. Habitat models showing mean density levels were developed for the most frequently occurring species, whilst binomial occurrence habitat models were built for less frequent species. The main predictors of elasmobranch habitats in the eastern English Channel were depth, bed shear stress and salinity, followed by seabed sediment type and temperature. Habitat maps highlighted contrasting habitat utilisation across species. Raja clavata, and to a...

Modelling Fish Habitat Suitability in the Eastern English Channel. Application to community habitat level ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre; Loots, Christophe; Koubbi, Philippe.
Valuable marine habitats and living resources can be found in the Eastern English Channel and in 2003, a Franco-British Interreg IIIA project, ‘Eastern Channel Habitat Atlas for Marine Resource Management’ (CHARM), was initiated to support decision-making for management of essential fish habitats. Fish habitat corresponds to geographic areas within which ranges of environmental factors define the presence of a particular species. Habitat Suitability index (HSI) modelling was used to relate fish geographic distribution and their relation towards environmental factors and to delineate their optimum habitat. This study was based on data obtained from 1988-2003 IFREMER’s Channel Ground Fish Surveys, including both species abundance and environmental data....

Modelling species distributions using regression quantiles ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Martin, C; Eastwood, P; Ernande, Bruno; Carpentier, Andre; Meaden, G; Coppin, Franck.
1. Species distribution modelling is an important and well-established tool for conservation planning and resource management. Modelling techniques based on central estimates of species responses to environmental factors do not always provide ecologically meaningful estimates of species-environment relationships and are being increasingly questioned. 2. Regression quantiles (RQ) can be used to model the upper bounds of species-environment relationships and thus estimate how the environment is limiting the distribution of a species. The resulting models tend to describe potential rather than actual patterns of species distributions. 3. Model selection based on null hypothesis testing and backward elimination, followed by validation procedures, are...

Morphological variability of the shape of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in relation to stock discrimination between the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Vaz, Sandrine; Coppin, Franck; Koubbi, Philippe; Carpentier, Andre.
Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus L. 1758 is an economically important species in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it is exploited from the Bay of Biscay to the southern North Sea (ICES, 2010). In Atlantic waters, there are two main areas where this species is caught, the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel. This species was initially exploited by the Spanish fleets along the Spanish coast inside the Bay of Biscay. Originally considered as valuable by-catch (Marchal, 2008), the growing exploitation ofM. surmuletus and a conspicuous increase in landings in the English Channel and the southern North Sea by French, English and Dutch fleets have been observed from the 1990s onwards. This was attributed to an increase...

Observations sur la répartition et l’abondance du merlan Merlangius merlangus (Gadidae) en Manche orientale à partir des données des campagnes CGFS ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre.
Since 1988, the IFREMER Fisheries Resources Laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer is carrying out a pluriannual project in the Eastern Channel to estimate, directly and by age groups, the abundance and the recruitment of species of commercial interest. These data are obtained during an annual trawl survey (taking place in October) which gives indications about the fish populations distribution and allows to get biological informations needed for stock assessments. The present study aimed to analyse the distribution and the abundance of whiting (Merlangius merlangus). In the Channel, this species is one of the most exploited by the French small-scale fishery. The results showed that the whiting distribution was mainly restricted to shallow waters in October and...

Perspectives de développement de la pêche associée aux DCP ancrés dans la Caraïbe ArchiMer
Reynal, Lionel; Doray, Mathieu; Carpentier, Andre; Druault-aubin, Vomakassi; Taquet, Marc; Lagin, Alain.
Deployment of anchored FADs has opened large pelagic resources to smallscale fisheries, which usually operate nearshore. The main difficulties in using FADs for fishing have now been identified. It concerns principally the design of FADs, their location, and also the type of management and exploitation. During the initial phase of FAD development, particular problems are mentioned, namely voluntary deterioration of the devices, marketing of the catches ... FADs exploitation in the area can still he optimised. The impact of FADs densities and locations (depth, distance from shore) on the concentration offish resources or on fisheryproduction is not established. Environmental impact of FADs is not weIl evaluated either. We would like to implement a workshop...

Spatial patterns and GIS habitat modelling of Solea solea, Pleuronectes flesus and Limanda limanda fish larvae in the eastern English Channel during the spring ArchiMer
Koubbi, Philippe; Loots, Christophe; Cotonnec, Gwenaelle; Harlay, Xavier; Grioche, Alain; Vaz, Sandrine; Martin, Canterbury Christ Church University; Walkey, Mike; Carpentier, Andre.
The spring distribution of larval fish stages of flatfishes in the Dover Strait (eastern English Channel) was studied in 1995 and 1999. Fish larvae were identified and sorted according to developmental stages in order to study their ontogenic distribution. The French coastal waters are characterised by an unstable tide-dependent front, which influences larval dispersion. In spring, the French coastal waters have a high phytoplanktonic production. They have higher temperatures, lower salinities and differences in current intensity compared with the central English Channel waters. Generalised Additive Models (GAM) combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to model the potential habitats of life stages considering data from three major...

Spatio-temporal patterns in demersal elasmobranchs from trawl surveys in the eastern English Channel (1988-2008) ArchiMer
Martin, Corinne; Vaz, Sandrine; Ellis, J. R.; Coppin, Franck; Le Roy, Didier; Carpentier, Andre.
Elasmobranchs have life-history characteristics that make them more vulnerable to fishing than many teleost fish. As commercial landings data are usually not sufficient for the monitoring and assessment of elasmobranchs, fisheries-independent data, geostatistics and Geographic Information Systems were used to investigate the spatio-temporal patterns of sharks (6 species), skates (9 species) and stingray in the eastern English Channel. Temporal trends in relative abundance and distributions of total-length frequencies were investigated using data collected over 21 yr from an annual survey using a Grande Ouverture Verticale (GOV) trawl. Temporal trends in relative abundance were examined qualitatively in relation to the reported conservation status for the...

Striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus, Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea: growth and reproductive biology ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Coppin, Franck; Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre.
Biological information is necessary for population structure assessment of economically important species. There are no known published studies on the age and reproduction of Mullus surmuletus in the north of the Bay of Biscay. The aim of this study was to estimate growth and reproductive biology of this species in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea from 1089 individuals, observed from February to December 2004. The length–weight relationship was described by the parameters: a = 3.284.10−6 and b = 3.243, being allometrically positive. Ages were determined from increments of otoliths, used entirely after a burning treatment. Marginal-increment analysis showed an annual periodicity of increment formation. Von Bertalanffy growth equations were...
